Calera Creek volunteers join statewide Coastal Cleanup Day

On Saturday September 19th, 29 volunteers came out to Calera Creek Park for California Coastal Cleanup Day. By removing 13 pounds of trash from the park, they were among the thousands of volunteers statewide who participated in this annual event to remove trash from our coast and watersheds.

In addition, they supported our ongoing efforts to restore the natural ecology of Calera Creek Park by removing hundreds of pounds of invasive plants and maintaining the health of native plants and trees. By removing invasive weeds such as Cape ivy (Delairea odorata), Himalayan blackberry (Himalayan blackberry), English ivy (Hedera helix), wild radish (Raphanus sativus), nasturtium (Tropaeolum), and periwinkle (Vinca major), they cleared space for native plants that are part of the natural ecosystem and serve important functions for local wildlife. Many of the plants removed were covering native plants, climbing up trees, or encroaching on the roadway and interfering with pedestrian safety.

The event was cohosted by Friends of Calera Creek Park and Pacific Beach Coalition. We’re grateful to the many volunteers, including local Cub Scout Pack 9 and Scout Troop 29, for dedicating their morning to our restoration efforts. We also thank City of Pacifica Public Works for managing the green waste from our quarterly events.
