Earth Day habitat restoration event a big success!

On Saturday April 18th, 58 volunteers came out to Calera Creek Park to support habitat restoration efforts in honor of Pacific Beach Coalition’s Earth Day of Action. Volunteers pulled non-native, invasive weeds, cleared debris that had fallen from eucalyptus trees, and cut back ivy that has been aggressively climbing several trees in the park. In total, we cleared an estimated 2,400 pounds of weeds and bark to make way for native plants and recreational use of the park.

Volunteers from local Scout Troop 29 did tremendous work to maintain areas of the park that were previously the focus of two Eagle Scout projects. Their efforts helped maintain walking paths and cleared space around native plants they had planted last year in partnership with Friends of Calera Creek Park.

Scouts and parents from Cub Scout Pack 9, along with other volunteers from near and far, cleared weeds around native planting areas. They also spread wood chips to deter weed growth in an area widely used for recreation — one of the few open spaces for play in Vallemar neighborhood.

We are grateful to the many new and returning volunteers for lending a hand to help restore native habitat and improve recreational opportunities in Calera Creek Park. We give special thanks to Scout Troop 29 and Cub Scout Pack 9, as well as the Pacific Beach Coalition, for their ongoing support of our work in Vallemar. Finally, we thank the City of Pacifica for providing wood chips and picking up our many piles of weeds!
