Spring 2025 update from the Steering Committee

March 30, 2025

Winter brought plenty of rain to Calera Creek Park, which was good for native planting but also fueled growth of non-native weeds. Last fall, the Friends of Calera Creek Park Steering Committee conducted some strategic planning to define our mission – to enhance the beauty, natural ecology and public enjoyment of the Park. We also began to develop a longer-term vision for our efforts, documenting some of the improvements we would like to make in various areas around the park. This guided subsequent efforts over the last few months to clear invasive and non-native weeds, lay down mulch, plant natives, and improve the safety and accessibility of the park.

Spring brings more visitors to Calera Creek Park, and we also look forward to welcoming volunteers seeking to participate in restoration activities. In March, youth volunteers completed an Eagle Scout service project to clear a walking path and plant natives in one segment of the park. Looking forward, we will welcome volunteers from the Pacific Beach Coalition to participate in four creek cleanup days this year. The first will be an Earth Day event on April 26th (9am–11am) to help clear weeds as part of our efforts to reduce fire fuels and restore native vegetation. We are grateful to all the volunteers who are supporting park improvements.
