This month, Vallemar resident and Eagle Scout Candidate Jack Bayley led a creek restoration service project to satisfy the requirements for his Eagle Project. Focusing on the area of the north side of the creek along Reina Del Mar near Nataqua Avenue, Jack and fellow scout volunteers cleared invasive weeds and laid down mulch to create a new walking path for park visitors. Jack crafted benches from tree stumps to place along the path. The volunteers also planted native plants sourced from Devils Mountain Nursery including: one David Gold Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia ‘David Gold’), three Dancing Tassels Currants (Ribes malvaceum ‘Dancing Tassels’), two Oregon Grapes (Mahonia aquifolium), three Jelly Bean Red Monkeyflowers (Mimulus Jelly Bean Red), two Dara’s Choice Sage (Salvia ‘Dara’s Choice’), three California buckwheat (Erigonum fasciculatum), six Coyote mint (Monardella villosa), and three Hummingbird Sage (Salvia spathacea). Jack spent weeks developing and executing the Eagle Scout project plan, collaborating with the City of Pacifica and the Friends of Calera Creek Park Steering Committee to ensure the project’s success. Congratulations to Jack – now a distinguished Eagle Scout!
