Steering Committee plants natives

February 3, 2025

On February 1st, members of the Steering Committee planted a variety of hardy native plants in the northeastern area of Calera Creek Park. The plants, sourced primarily from Devil Mountain Wholesale Nursery included: one California buckeye (Aesculus californica), five Anchor Bay ceanothus  (Ceanothus gloriosus ‘Anchor Bay’), four Hearst’s ceanothus (Ceanothus hearstiorum), three Blueblossom ceanothus (Ceanothus thyrsiflorus ‘Skylark’), three California coffeeberry (Frangula californica), one Dark Star ceanothus (C. impressus x C. papillosus var. roweanus), and one sticky monkey flower (Mimulus aurantiacus). The Steering Committee planted in February to take advantage of late winter and early spring rains, which can help the plants get established. Dedicated volunteers will water the plants through the summer to make sure they survive drier weather. As they mature, the native plants – which are adapted to local conditions – will no longer require supplemental watering.
